In 1904 after working as a fireman for the past five years John began work as a laborer for the Curtice Brothers Company. The Curtice Brothers Company was established in 1868 and was a local preserving and packing company of fruits, vegetables, meats, jams, jellies, and preserves. The Curtice Brothers Company created the “Blue Label” tomato ketchup and chili sauce as part of their advertising campaign. They used blue labels on their products to make them easily recognizable to consumers. The Curtice Brothers Company’s was one of the top three ketchup producers in the country competing with Heinz and T.A. Snider as the top manufacturer (Rochester House Directory, 1087).
